The Nothing I Did Today

I've always been a list-maker, garnering untold satisfaction from the dozens of little check-marks on my to-do rosters daily. Granted, my lists often include items like "eat," "shower," "get out of bed," but still...a tangible marked-up account of how I have spent my time is the end product. And these lists become like journals to me. I can look back in my scores of saved notebooks at the dates and the items on the list that day and clearly remember, based on the to-do's, what was happening in my family, with my friends, in my creative brain at the time.

The last few months...okay, year (pregnancy + 5 1/2 month old baby), my lists have been considerably shorter than usual. And wrapping my head around that, accepting that, has honestly been very hard. I have had to re- learn how to place value on resting, sitting, snuggling, singing songs and laughing...moments of quiet Mammahood surrender which, obviously, I knew how to value when L & R were babes, but that seems so long ago! They're so...active and...independent now. But what I have learned and come to accept, is that these days of no (or very few--I still eat and get out of bed) check marks are beyond important to my infant son, and my older children as well. Even when I feel like I'm "getting nothing done" (I haven't blogged! I haven't written or read or sewn or drawn! The laundry is piling up and shouldn't I be making my bread from scratch everyday?),  it's not nothing to Jasper. It's everything to him.

Slowly, very slowly, I'm figuring out a balance. I'm placing less importance on excessive social interaction (something I never even realized I had been giving extra to) and spotless housekeeping, and more importance on family interaction, creative "me" time, and moments--whenever we can find them--with my husband, who is, after all, the other half of my soul. I've set some writing goals, and hope to be posting here a little more to share them, and I've remembered how to linger in the face-to-face moments with my little ones, even when I've checked very little off my list.

For now, at the end of each day, my home and family are (mostly) clean and (generally) safe. My husband and children, I hope, are emotionally, physically, and spiritually well-fed. That is not nothing, I lay in bed assuring myself each night. Quite often, that is enough to change the world.

Today List : Y is for Yes, Please

      Today I am thinking:

:: about how joining the YMCA two weeks ago is one of the smartest things Brian and I have ever done for our family. And not just because the showers there always have enough hot water that I can wash my hair and shave my legs (I don't have to choose like I do at home!), but for a lot of other reasons as well. The independence available to our kids within a safe environment, the sense of community, the active family time, and the fun classes...I could go on.

:: I can't believe my kids have developed, so quickly, into little rock climbers, scaling walls like Spiderman and ringing bells at the top of routes that I've seen adults struggle with (Mamma buttons busting here). They can't get enough and I love the trust relationship that has to exist between climber and belayer (usually me). There's a whole life metaphor there...

:: why didn't we do this sooner? We've always tried to be a healthy, active family, but we've also always let winter kind of get us down. It seems like such a 'duh' solution now, far more affordable than we'd expected, and worth twice what we pay.

:: how nice it is, when I'm  feeling a little low, to say "Mamma needs endorphins, let's go play," and to have a place to go play, all together (family basketball, anyone?) or individually, each of getting a little space and a little attitude boost, so when we come back together again we're ready to be together, appreciating one another.

Today I'm thinking: I <3 our local YMCA.

Today List: Snow

Today I was reminded of:

::all the reasons I love snow. Especially the kind of snow we've had falling on our little valley continuously since Tuesday night. The fluffy, soft, feathery, sink-up-to-your-knees-with-every-step-powder kind of snow. (Actually, we're sinking to our thighs now as it's still coming down) Yesterday we played in our own yard, hanging our leftover Christmas tree popcorn strings out for the birds and squirrels, and romping with the neighbor's puppy, but today we ventured out with cousins to the park down the street to sled. And sled. And build a snow fort. And sled some more.

::what snow tastes like. Like water, you say? Au contraire. Snow tastes like the coldest warm and the purest white. Like frozen anticipation and long-ago memories and cloudy sky.

::the way an abundance of snow can bring people together. We live on a somewhat busy street with the majority of the houses being rental duplexes (duplexi?). It's not the most neighborly kind of neighborhood. But snow is magic. It gets neighbors talking to each other as they shovel their driveways, help one another dig out their cars, and keep the sidewalks clear. Cars become few and the middle of the street transforms into a crossroads of children pulling sleds in ecstatic-school's-cancelled-celebration, families on cross-country skis, and friendly dogs jumping in and out of drifts.
Snow changes attitudes from "I just live here" to "We're all in this together."

:: the flush that comes to my cheeks when I come in from a day in the snow...heat that radiates my ears and face and the tingle in my legs and toes that tells me my body has worked hard and breathed deep and is tired but happy.
So (snow) happy.

Today List

Today I'm grateful for

:: waking to a world that has gone, overnight, from patchy spots of snow on brown grass to a white Christmas winter wonderland. Like magic.

:: children who can't wait until after breakfast, who can't even be bothered to put a coat over their pajamas, before opening the door and touching their suddenly changed world.

:: late brunches of pancakes and cocoa, followed by the noise of snow pants sliding over jeans, boots clunking on the stairs, and muffled giggles from within coats zipped up over the chin.

::my own warm coat and fleece-lined boots. Off I go...

Today List

Today I'm stitching:

:: felt hand puppets to go with the puppet theater the kids are getting for Christmas

:: stockings with the kids- burlap and raw-edged vintage fabric- two eager little stitchers taking turns pushing the pedal and cutting the threads

:: popcorn and gumdrop strings for our handmade Christmas tree. Does that count as stiching? I think it does. Stitching and a snack all in one.

:: most importantly, I'm stitching memories for our family.

What are you stitching today?
